TAC Multi Arts returns to beautiful Kingsland Point Park!
This year we are excited to offer the opportunity for our campers to explore the rhythm through the cultures of the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and the USA, with renowned jazz, Latin, and classical artists. We are excited to announce our amazing artists this year!
Week 1: Highlights of week 1 will include musicians from Los Quisqueyanos, a group of folkloric musicians from the Dominican Republic, who will share their stories and unique instruments which make up the vibrant tradition of "Perico Ripiao" with our campers. Dancers Devin Flores and Vira Lee will teach our campers the social dances of the Dominican Republic, including merengue and bachata! In addition, Peruvian percussionist Hector Morales will return, but this time with his own version of "bucket drumming," giving our campers a chance to learn to play and read rhythms with this master educator and musician! And tap and hip hop dancer Funmi Sofola will lead explorations in rhythm through the art of tap dancing and hip hop. Funmi has worked with artists and companies such as Ayodele Casel, Caleb Teicher, Dormeshia, Jared Grimes, Marshal Davis Jr., Jessie Sawyers, Sole Defined, Elements of Sound, and Alchemy Tap Project. Stage credits include New York City Center (Encores! Jelly's Last Jam), The Joyce Theater (BZZZ), and the American Repertory Theater (Diary of a Tap Dancer). In addition to performing, Funmi has taught at Steps on Broadway and Broadway Dance Center as guest faculty in NYC.
Devin Flores is schooled in a variety of Latin Amerian social dances, and is a distinguished salsa dancer and instructor based in New York City. Born into a legacy of mambo pioneers and immersed in salsa from an early age, Devin has performed, competed, and taught alongside his parents and his partner, Vira Lee. While honoring his family’s legacy, he has also made his own mark on the salsa scene, performing and teaching worldwide in countries such as Thailand, the UK, the Netherlands, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador, and Mexico.
Week 2: Campers will continue explorations of tap and hip hop with Funmi Sofola (see above), as well as develop their rhythm through the tradition of "SALSA" with dancers Devon and Vira (see above), and learn about the Afro-Cuban clave and montunos with Colombian pianist Pablo Mayor and improvisation on the flute with charanga musician Connie Grossman. Pablo Mayor grew up playing salsa music in Cali, Colombia, and since coming to NYC has been the pianist with the renowned Cuban "Orquesta Broadway" for over 20 years, while producing his own album "El Barrio Project-SALSA" with his Folklore Urbano Orchestra. Connie is a both a seasoned educator at both the elementary and university levels (Currently on the faculty at Lehman college), as well as an active performing artist in the Cuban "Charanga" scene in NYC with NYC's top charanga bands. This week, campers will continue explorations of rhythm on buckets with Peruvian percussion guru Hector Morales.
Week 3: We are excited to have Calpulli Mexican Dance Company who will share the company’s expertise in Mexican traditional dance, music, garment-making, and culture. Calpulli Co-Founder, Alberto Lopez Herrera, will share his 30 years of experience in Mexican folk dance and story-telling as Choreographer, Wardrobe Designer & Maker, and Teaching Artist, along with musician Marilyn Castillo. We will also welcome Musiquita, a dynamic and wildly fun husband-wife duo, with music in Spanish and English led by Blanca Cecilia González (vocals/violin/ukulele/percussion) and Jesse Elder (vocals/piano/melodica/percussion). And campers will continue to explore salsa music with musicians Pablo Mayor and Connie Grossman (see above).
We continue our long-term relationship with beloved local multi-disciplinary artist Jill Liflander (@jillypuppets) who will lead our campers in movement, theater, and storytelling activities around our cultural themes weeks 2 and 3, veteran musician Vinny Nobile who will teach general music throughout the month of July with musical storytelling and games (Orff-trained, director of "TrommyTones"), and TAC's art director Melissa Lohman-Wild (@wildartandplay, early childhood teacher at Little Leaf Preschool) who is back this summer to lead thoughtful, nature inspired daily visual art activities all 3 weeks.
We will end the final week of camp with "FRIDAY FIESTA" and a performance by Musiquita for all our campers.
Campers will be grouped by age and led in arts-related workshops and recreational activities around the cultural theme each day, with breaks for snack and lunch. Activities include: music, dance, theater, visual art, as well as counselor-led sports activities throughout the week. Your kids will get LOTS of exercise walking this vast park under the shade of the beautiful trees at Kingsland Point Park!
Our older campers (Gr. 1-4) can stay for our afternoon extension program, campers grouped by age.
Peter Royston and his Anywhere Theater has in the past led Afternoon Theater inspired by our cultural theme this year for our 3rd/4th graders and Jamie Vanegas of iD Studio Theater has led our Theater Creation for our youngest campers. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements.
Last year's theme we explored the culture and arts of South America, with a focus on Argentina with singer, actor, dancer, and educator Facundo Augustín, harpist and educator Nicolás Carter who specializes in the traditions of Paraguay, and renowned percussionist and educator Hector Morales from Peru, in addition to other renowned South American guest artists.
